Getting Started
What can I expect during my first therapy session?
Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know you and understand what brought you to therapy. We will discuss your concerns, goals, personal history, and any questions you may have about the process.
You will also review important paperwork, including confidentiality, policies, and consent forms. The first session is less about fixing everything and more about building clarity, comfort, and connection.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
Therapy can be helpful for anyone feeling overwhelmed, stuck, emotionally exhausted, anxious, disconnected, or simply in need of support and clarity. You do not have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy.
Many people come to therapy to improve relationships, manage stress, process life transitions, build confidence, heal from past experiences, or create healthier patterns in their lives.
What should I do before my first appointment?
Before your session, please complete all intake forms and paperwork through the client portal. Find a quiet, comfortable space if you are attending virtually, and come prepared to share openly at your own pace.
There is no pressure to have all the answers. Therapy is a process, not a performance.
Therapy Basics
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Your privacy is extremely important to us. Everything shared in therapy is kept confidential, with a few legal exceptions required by New York State law, including situations involving danger to yourself or others, abuse or neglect of a child, elder, or vulnerable person, or court-ordered disclosures.
Your therapist will review confidentiality and answer any questions during your first session.
What is the difference between a therapist, psychologist, counselor, coach, and psychiatrist?
- Therapists, counselors, and clinical social workers provide psychotherapy and emotional support for mental health concerns, relationships, trauma, anxiety, depression, and personal growth.
- Psychologists typically hold doctoral degrees and may provide therapy, psychological testing, and evaluations.
- Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in mental health and can prescribe medication.
- Life coaches focus on personal growth, accountability, mindset, and goal achievement, but do not diagnose or treat mental health conditions.
At Indigo Dove, we help guide you toward the level of support that best fits your needs.
What if I do not feel connected to my therapist?
A strong therapeutic relationship matters. If you feel your therapist is not the right fit, we encourage open communication. We are committed to helping you find a clinician who aligns with your needs, personality, and goals.
Sometimes the best breakthroughs begin with the right connection.
Sessions and Scheduling
How do I schedule an appointment?
You can contact our office by phone, complete a request through our website, or reach out through the client portal. Our team will help match you with a clinician based on your needs, preferences, and availability.
How long are therapy sessions?
Most individual therapy sessions are approximately 45 to 60 minutes. Couples, family, and group sessions may vary depending on the type of service provided.
How often will I attend therapy?
The frequency of therapy depends on your goals, needs, and schedule. Some clients attend weekly, while others benefit from biweekly or periodic sessions. Your therapist will work with you to develop a plan that feels supportive and realistic.
